OnlyFins - The Worst Naga RP Advice

Recommended Posts

Hey there, it's everyone's least favourite Naga Rper, cloaca joke! I mean Adarsha!

Back in the olden days of 2020 I wrote a kind of summary on Naga things, compiling all that mess in one place, and I thought I'd maybe share it with y'all, since Naga RP is kind of popular these days! I would not exactly call this a guide and no one should feel compelled to follow a word I say, but maybe it could be useful if you don't want to scour a thousand wikis for obscure dumb sources. With this, I want to make a disclaimers right here:

- Naga have VERY LITTLE OFFICIAL LORE. Most substance comes from the old RPG stuff, but other than that it's usually very barebones and changes from expansion to expansion to suit the narrative. While I will avoid highly personal headcanons and custom lore, I will be using both RPG lore and Speculation to fill the gaps, which will be marked as such.

With that in mind, let's gooooooo!
???

? BASIC INFORMATION ?

The Naga are a race of amphibious snake people who live in the depths of the ocean and along its shores. Originally, they were known as the Highborne: the elves that ruled over the Kaldorei Empire under Queen Azshara. Following the War of the Ancients and the implosion of the Well of Eternity, the elven capital (Zin-Azshari) and its inhabitants (and like a whole big fucking chunk of the world) were sent to the bottom of the Ocean, where Queen Azshara bargained with the Old Gods (specifically N'zoth) and secured their survival through their transformation from Elf to Naga. Since then, they have become a race of their own (meaning that not every Naga "used to be a Night Elf, you know") with their own culture and society.

? CULTURE ?

Spoiler

Naga, like their Highborne predecessors, value magic and are addicted to it. However, their women have generally retained more of their elven affinity for magic and intellect whereas men have grown in strength at the cost of their intelligence. Kaldorei society has always had a more matriarchal lean to it, but this cemented the women as the primary ruling class and the men as the muscle. This does not mean that men cannot use magic at all, or that they are unable to rise through the ranks - some become powerful royal guards, warlords, or Naga Lords. Fitting for a race centred around the concept that "All Women Are Queens", mainstream Naga tend to revere Queen Azshara as not only their ruler, but as a demigod that resides over them, capable of granting them powers through faith. While most men serve beneath women, it's a very benign form of matriarchy, and they are not oprressed. In fact, lore dictates that most men enjoy serving under women because they... find it hot. Yes. That's the actual lore. A dev wrote and published that Naga men are simps that get the hots for taking orders from their women. But Naga are culturally diverse, with some living in elaborate palaces under the seas and others inhabiting little more than caves and ruins. Some retain their culture and education and even etiquette from their Highborne days, whereas others are savage raiders. This duality might have a connection to one's generation (how far removed they are from their Highborne origins) and their proximity to the Capital. Either way, Naga tend to be proud and arrogant, viewing the Surface World as their birthright and having their hearts and thoughts filled with hatred towards its current inhabitants.

However, Naga are shown to be capable of putting aside their differences for the greater good - greater good usually meaning their own benefit. They have extended aid to the early Blood Elves and saved them from being massacred at human hands, helping them on their journey to become the green eyed menaces we know and love today. They have also helped the Illidari fight the Scourge and the Legion - and while official lore dictates that this was originally done due to the Old Gods' demands, they remained true to Lord Illidan for a long ass while, and even the writers admit that their assistance could well have been genuine. Naga seem to have an affinity for bargains, having originally consorted with Demons, then Old Gods, the Illidari, and others. Although their pride and true allegiance to the Queen usually results in them emphasising that they are allies, and never servants. This is true even with the Old Gods in most cases, considering that Azshara bargained for sovereignty, saving them from becoming another mindless servant race. Naga are capable of betraying Old God interests, joining other causes, and even leaving the service of the Queen. Some Naga worship Neptulon or other forces, and have turned against Azshara. During the Legion Blizzcon the developers stated that Naga are as varied as people, so do not be afraid to give them their own goals and motives and loyalties.

That being said, mainline Naga are fairly cruel. Legend says, the Old Gods blackened their hearts and filled it with hate. Common sense says that if you scorn a race of elitist elves that were so arrogant they wanted to purge the world of "lesser races" they do not become better people. Either way, Naga have a history of enslaving Mur'guls, Murlocs (who often revere them as gods), beasts, Neptulon personally, Gilgoblins, and others! Slavery is common! Even on Outland, they just couldn't resist. In fact, their cruelty is so dire, that they are known to eat other sentient races, growing fully sentient Makrura on farms to be consumed, and driving the Ankoan to the brink of extinction.

? BIOLOGY ?

Spoiler

Naga are weird y'all. When I say Naga Lore barely exists and half of it doesn't make sense, or is caught up between a thousand retcons, I mean it.
Generally speaking they are a race of snake-people with severe gender dimorphism. They are covered in scales in a variety of hues ranging from blues to greens and greys, possess long tails instead of legs, and their bodies are decorated with colourful fins. The men are large and more monstrous in appearance with crocodile/snake/dragon like faces. The women tend to be more slender and elf-like in appearance with more humanoid faces, but they usually possess four to six pair of arms and a natural affinity for magic, usually relating to storm or frost. They molt like real snakes (and said molting is described as having magical properties), and old text implies that they are cold blooded. In an absolute fucking curveball for a race of people with ice based magic who live in the depths of the fucking sea, Naga go into torpor in the cold. (It's basically when your phone has to recharge, but biological. Like sleep, but you have less of a say about it.) How that works is anyone's guess, but the old RPG lore explains that the volcanic cracks that formed when Zin-Azshari plummeted into the sea floor heated up the waters for them, and Nazjatar favours heat vents. Perhaps their powers over frost magic help build immunity. Similarly, despite being amphibians, some Naga use alchemy to breathe easier on land using the air sacs of bloatrays. Other Naga express distaste for being on the surface, complaining about the dry air, the cold, or the bright lights. However, either due to the residues of the Well of Eternity or the tampering of the Old Gods, Naga are a race of mutants with insane biological diversity. This means that no two naga look exactly the same (despite what game models might tell you) and many possess radical mutations that differentiate them from the norm. (This is useful when handwaving the occasional clash in headcanons or RP styles, I find.)

Regardless of the reason or the severity, we do know that Naga have many sub-species, and are speculated to be capable of mutating. Royal Guards were theorised to gain what magic they have from being mutated by the more magical women, whereas the models known as NagaEliteMale, whom I prefer to call Naga Femboys, are the rare elite that retain both elven features and magic like women do. Here are some of the classic varieties!

- Naga Brutes are men who are transformed into hulking beasts, further increasing their strength at the cost of their intelligence. They are used almost as siege weaponry given their giant size and power, but they are not completely mindless beasts. Some brutes have acted as commanders, and forced tribes of Murlocs to worship them. These creatures have both legs and arms, but tend to walk on all fours in a bestial fashion.

- Naga Centaurs are women with the lower body of a giant fucking crustacean. They have four arms and like six...eight pairs of legs and a tail. They are less serpentine in appearance, and tend to be physically powerful. They are often used as commanders of the Naga forces.

- Naga Lords and Naga Royal Guards look like most male Naga but have been mutated to be even larger. They are prime specimen of the Naga men, and possess magic far beyond the usual. These Naga often hold positions equal to women and lead their own tribes or raiding parties. Like women, they mostly tend to master hydromancy (summoning water elementals, giant waves, etc.) and storm magic. Elite Naga men may be a variation on this, who have more octopus like lower bodies, and humanoid faces similar to that of female Naga. They enjoy high positions, and it's likely that they are men that lucked out and got the more "feminine" deal, where they retained their magical, elven past.

- Some Naga women have snakes or tentacles for hair. Typically they are Sea Witches and high ranking women, although that is not a mandatory thing. Plenty of Tidemistresses and Sea Witches appear as more ordinary Naga Women.

- Avatars of Azshara (Wrath of-, Radiance of-, etc.) are handmaidens who have given their lives to the cause and were transformed into giant fucking monsters even by Naga standards. They are big and monstrous and strong and are fuelled by the soul of the Handmaiden like a little generator in their chests. This likely won't come up but it's good to know.

- Naga anomalies are just Naga who are so fucking mutated, you can't really classify them as anything anymore. Maybe they are covered in shells, or venomous spikes. Maybe instead of being snakes, they have a ton of tentacles. Maybe they are the size of a small mountain. The point is, these people are messed up. However, Naga view them favourably, as their adaptability is proof of Naga superiority in their eyes - they believe that by accumulating mutations and powers, they will one day become near indestructible.

Naga lifespans are not strictly elaborated on in current lore, however we do know that at least some of them are virtually immortal. Lady Vashj, Queen Azshara, and other high ranking members have been alive and active since before the War of the Ancients. Whether newer generations possess similar longevity or not is unknown, but there are definitely younger Naga around who aren't super ancient.

Naga also reproduce via eggs (I will let you draw your own conclusions beyond that) which are collected in communal spawning pools and central hatcheries. In the case of Nazjatar, it is shown that Naga seem to have a symbiotic relationship with Zoatroids, who collect their eggs and tend to their young. Basically jellyfish babysitters. This may not be the case in regions further away from the depths, where the Old God servants of the deeps are less likely to appear. Regardless, Naga seem to gather their young in one place. It is unknown if they have a sense of close familial bonds, or how many eggs they lay (snakes lay a LOT, yo) but they do tend to organise themselves into tribes, which may imply a loose relation.

? NAGA RELATIONS ?

Spoiler

Although the mainline Naga see themselves as the true rulers of the waters, most natural water-dwelling creatures see them as intruders and a cancer that never truly belonged there. As a result, Naga have pretty bad relations with most sea creatures they could not tame or drive extinct. This includes the Sea Giants, the Makrura, the Jinyu, the Ankoan, and most others. They have MAJOR beef with Neptulon whom they see as their only real obstacle in their path to total domination. They're also on bad terms with the Vrykul and especially the Kvaldir. Basically anything that isn't with them is very much against them.

On land, it's not much better. Most people are immediately hostile towards Naga forces, given that historically they've mostly been invaders and raiders. And because they're Old God adjacent monsters who descended from elf-nazis that almost tore the world apart in an effort to cleanse all 'lesser races' and so that their Queen could bang Space-Satan. It's not a good reputation. That being said, there are numerous examples of Naga working with landwalkers, even without them being (lame) Neptulon worshippers who betrayed their Queen. The Naga worked with the Blood Elves to save them from extinction, and they worked with the demon hunters and pretty much all of Azeroth to save the world from the Legion. They have been known to cooperate with neutral factions, and have hired gnomes, goblins, and ogres to aid them. They even worked with the Defias at one point! Similarly, some of the Illdari Naga have had good relations with the Fel Orcs of Outland. So, overall it is not impossible for them to work with those that are willing to work with them, but they would probably have to overcome some cultural differences first.

? NAGA MAGIC ?

Spoiler

Naga are inherently tied to storms and sea. Most of their spells are related to frost, storm, and water magic. In fact, according to legend, great storms follow Sea Witches wherever they go! But their magic appears to be a bit different than how we see it with the classes and player-lore. Their magic seems to have an extra focus on a ritualistic, ceremonial aspect. Instead of simply casting spells at their immediate foes, we see Naga use long rituals and ;ove sacrifices to conjure greater spells. In these cases, we see Naga women joining forces and partaking in rituals together, often fueled by blood sacrifices to strengthen them. These sacrifices tend to be Murlocs, but can likely be anything. Through various questlines, we see them attempt the following:
- sink an entire island
- melt Northrend's ice
- use the Eye of Sargeras in a ritual to melt the Frozen Throne
- Fuel their offensive in Nazjatar
- etc.
It's fair to assume that these kind of ceremonial spells are used to accomplish greater feats. Please don't sink islands. But it makes sense that your Naga might sacrifice some Murlocs to empower themselves. In RPG lore, it's also said that some Naga Witches are effectively priests and diviners that gain powers directly from Azshara, empowered by their faith. Finally, we know that some Naga are capable of mutating life forms, as some of the beasts in their service are said to be results of such magical tampering, like Snapdragons and Brutes.

? NAGA FORCES ?

Spoiler

The Naga army consists of more than just the myrmidon guard and their sorcerous mistresses. As a lot of Naga society is about dominance (owo) it is only natural that the Naga have bent most sealife to their will.

- Murlocs and Mur'gul
While Murlocs are not universally loyal to the Naga as whole, it is a very common practice among Naga tribes to enslave them or simply make them worship them as gods so that they do their bidding. (Murlocs tend to worship the strongest sea related thing nearby) Mur'gul are similar, but they were mutated to be more vicious than regular Murlocs, and they tend to be more loyal to the Naga due to their superstitious fear of the serpents' magical powers. They make up the ground forces of plenty of tribes, and act as servants and builders - basically they do the bitch work no Naga wants to do.

- Gillgoblins, kind of?
Again, they tend to enslave most things they can, and Gilgoblins are among them. They're like goblins, but with gills. They're basically treated about as well as Murloc slaves, except they are more intelligent and capable.

- Snapdragons
Kind of the Naga answer to Kaldorei Nightsabers, the Snapdragons are beasts in service to the Naga. Think of them as basically reptilian attack dogs. Sometimes they are depicted as more fishlike, other times they resemble a Naga man on all fours, or a lizard-monster, but they all have similar characteristics. They are a dangerous amphibious animal created by Naga sorcery that obey them without hesitation. Snapdragons are also incredibly venomous, which is even more of a threat than their bite.

- Wind Seprents and Couatl
They're ...snakes with wings. Another tamed and bred beast in the Naga arsenal, the Couatl are giant snakes with wings, capable of swimming fast underwater and flight on the lands. They spit acid and they're really fucking large.

- Dragon turtles
Some superstitious Naga actually consider turtles to be an ill omen that brings bad luck. This, however, did not stop them from taming giant dragon turtles and, much like the Brutes, using them as basically siege weapons. Again, pretty self explanatory, they're super huge evil turtles with a lot of armour, a big bite, and the ability to chuck rocks at the enemy.

- Tidal Guardians
The umbrella term for a number of large sea snakes, deepwater beasts, and eel creatures that dwell in the bottom of the ocean. They tend to have a long, serpentine body. Naga tend to summon them to guard things and locations important to them.

- Sea Giants
Though they are actually the enemies of Naga, it is not unheard of that they are brought under the control of the Naga through magic or other means of persuasion. They're... like giants, but underwater.

- BIG BOYS
The Naga have managed to tame a number of gigantic and dangerous underwater beasts. This includes Krakens and Leviathans, Hydra, creates the developers haven't even come up with yet. Basically anything that's freaky and huge and lives very deep underwater. Think of real deep sea creatures, but mythical.

- And basically everything else
Given their belief that Naga have a birthright to rule, Naga pretty much try to conquer and enslave anything they come across. The sporelings and beasts of outland, their enemies, crustacean creatures, water elementals, doesn't really matter. If they can, they'll tame and enslave them - and if they can't they'll wage war upon them and probably turn them into food like the Jinyu and the Makrura.

- Old God Servants
We don't know if the relation between them has changed since N'zoth yeeted Azshara into Old God jail, but the two are known to work together. Faceless ones can sometimes show up leading Naga Forces and Zoatroids tend to their young. From what conversation we've heard, however, their relationship is not exactly on the best terms. The greater servants of the Old Gods don't tend to value Naga and plenty of the Naga insist that they do not serve anyone but their Queen.

- ACTUAL NAGA
Men make up the majority of Naga front lines (though just as some Naga men can cast magic, Naga battlemaidens exist as well) fighting with spears, tridents, nets, etc. Behind the safety of their lines are the Sirens and Sea Witches, who cast spells and shoot arrows from a distance.

- actual siege weapons
While Naga make good use of the beastlife surrounding them, they have been shown to be capable at engineering war machines. Trebuchets, ballistas, and...cannons that shoot giant tridents (yes, really) are just some of the weapons in the Naga arsenal. They are capable of impressive feats of engineering, and managed to even weaponise a big plumbing system once. Is that cool or lame?

Now for the messy bits!

? ILLIDARI NAGA ?

Spoiler

I get this question asked a lot. What are the Illidari Naga? What is their alignment? How do they feel about Azshara? To get into this, you have to understand one thing. Blizzard writes WoW lore on the fly. It's flavour text to justify whatever nonsense they pull from their butt this expansion. It has changed, like, five times just in relation to this question. So let's get a bit of out-of-universe history lesson here.

- When The Frozen Throne came out, Illidan was a lot more morally ambiguous. The entire game focused on more anti-hero archetypes, and he was no different. Back then, not everything he did was some master plan to oppose the Legion, his loyalty towards demons was a lot more genuine (if coerced), and he was mostly guided by self interest. Back then, it was explained that he summoned the Naga because he wanted a force that shared his desire for vengeance against the Night Elves and had a history of working with demons (Vashj even explicitly tells Kael to turn to demons for help when he tells her about his addiction). The Naga remembered and respected Illidan, so they were fine with the plan. They would aid him against the Lich King on Kil'jaeden's orders, break into the Tomb of Sargeras to use the Eye of Sargeras to melt the Frozen Throne, and they would get to kill Night Elves and flood the north. So in short

fine with illidan/fine with demons/loyal to azshara/hostile to the surface

- Then by TBC and WoW it was already pretty clear that Illidan was very strictly anti-demon. At this point, they were still pretty firmly villains, replacing Outland's demonic overlords but proving no better. With Lady Vashj in charge, the tribes working for Illidan (now named as the Coilfang, Coilskar, Bloodscale, Darkcrest, and Wrathfin) were still very loyal to Azshara. They were not a splinter faction or rebels, but an extension of the Nazjatar Empire, and even imprisoned "heretics" that turned to Neptulon to worship. (Why you'd do that on Outland is again, anyone's guess.) So,

loyal to illidan/not cool with demons/loyals to azshara/hostile to the surface

- After TBC we have a brief intermission period where the Illidari Naga are not very relevant, but during the Pearl of Pandaria comics we see that an Illidari Naga comes back from Outland with her Fel Orc boyfriend (yes, really) and works alongside, and under the command, of Azshara stan Naga to find Pandaria, so we can tell that at least in the MoP era, the Queen's Naga and the Illidari Naga are still on the same page and keep in touch.

- With Legion, the writers throw us a curveball. This is where things get fucky wucky. Illidan is now a nice tragic anti-hero who was just misunderstood, the demon hunters are welcome back home, and we have to work with the Naga. Now the Blizzard devs must have felt that they had to sell you on the concept, after they spent several expansions making you kill them. So the Coilskar (at this point the only Illidari tribe with any screentime) are considerably nicer. They work with the surface, they save the world, and they don't seem to object much when you go to Azsuna to fight their Azshara Enjoyer brethren. This creates the popular idea that the Illidari Naga are no longer loyal to Azshara after a decade. This might be the case! Maybe it's a more case by case basis. We never get clear answers, and we don't really find out what they do after Legion! We do know that we have to get rid of some Monster Energy Drink looking Fel Naga who chose the Legion "over Azshara", so maybe they're still loyal and the writing is just bad! Either way,

loyal to illidan/not cool with demons/not loyal to azshara?/not hostile to the surface

- Now isn't that lovely character development? A shame Chronicles immediately retcons it. See, in BFA, Naga are villains again, so the writers have to quickly backpedal and now justify why we're killing them again after working hand in hand(s) to save the world! Illidan? More like, Illi-who? To better tie them to the N'zoth expansion, it is now revealed that Naga only ever joined the serve Illidan to cause chaos on N'zoth's orders! Psyche! They were always evil! All of them! Fuck you! In the Eternal Palace raid, one of the Sea Witches Azshara summons is canonically a named Illidari Naga from before, implying that at least some must have went home and returned to the Queen! Personally I think this twist overall is really stupid and many people agree, but just to recap,

not loyal to illidan/not cool with demons/loyal to azshara/hostile to the surface

- But some people thought, hey, this is weird! If Vashj was just playing Illidan, why did she apologise to him with her dying breath? Why did they stay there for years even after he failed what he was set out to do? So they asked on the best site on the internet, the Hellsite Twitter. And there, developers gave a biiiig shrug and said "look man idk, maybe Vashj changed her mind over time and grew to like Illidan".  We also know that in Shadowlands, Vashj speaks with fondness for both Illidan AND Azshara. So finally we have,

loyal to illidan/not cool with demons/loyal to azshara/??? to the surface

So what does this mean? That WoW lore is inconsistent? Yes. But also, that certain nuances will be up to you! What we know is that the original Illidari Naga were Azshara Loyalists who were fine with the more unseemly tasks Illidan set for them. They were not rebels, rogues, or traitors. However, over time, with the Illidari being welcomed back into the world, some might have changed sides. Some might be more loyal to the current Illidari and the good guys, while others are not. Some went back to Azshara! How your character handles this is up to you to explore. If the demon hunters had an alliance with Azshara, how did BFA change their relations? Are your Azshara loyalist Illidari Naga still accepted after the Illidari partook in attacking Nazjatar? Did they leavethe Queen? Did they leave the Illidari? Juicy RP conflict for you to decide! If you want my take, my Illidari Naga was always loyal to Azshara, and saw opposing the demons a worthy cause because them "abandoning the Highborne" and "failing in their bargain with the Queen" demanded reprimand! And because she wants Azshara to rule the world, and you can't rule the world if Sargeras destroys it! But that's just me! You write your own stories.

? NAGA AND N'ZOTH ?

Spoiler

Okay Blizzard, seriously, why do you do this to me? Okay, so waaay back when, Naga were only loyal to Azshara and they transformed because of the Well's unstable energies. Then it was Old Gods. Now we have the question, what is their relation to N'zoth! Now, since Chronicle, there is a popular headcanon that Naga did not have free will, and served N'zoth mindlessly. This is mostly because of that Illidari Naga quote where the text says that they aided Illidan not out of loyalty to him, but because "N'zoth willed it". At no point does it specify whispers or mind control. To me, this is no different than a soldier going to war because his king wills it - that doesn't mean that Anduin is mind controlling his soldiers to go fight for him (though that would be cool).

In fact, there's pretty strong evidence to the contrary. The Naga are capable of rebelling. We have Naga who served Neptulon, we have neutral Naga who serve no one, we have Naga who turned to the Legion, and we have the devs saying that some might have genuinely switched fully to Illidan. If they had no free will, they would not be able to disobey N'zoth's will. The only examples we have to Naga being fanatical to N'zoth at all is Uu'nat, who is a special case and a personal gift to N'zoth by the Eternal Girlboss Azshara (ergo not the norm) and the Shirakess tribe that talk about N'zoth like a god, but they're also the tribe that specialise in Void Magic above all.

We know that Azshara is certainly not loyal, with her planning to summon N'zoth only to kill him and supplant his throne! In other appearances, there seems to be some hostility between the Naga and the Old God Servants, and the way they talk, they don't seem to get along, they just work together. Personally, I can see this as a case of the Naga seeing them as just another benefactor like the Legion used to be, or the Illidari. Someone to align with, but not serve.

? NEUTRAL NAGA ?

Spoiler

While the main focus of this list is on Illidari- and Azshara loyalist Naga, neutral Naga can and do exist. This was clarified in Legion, that there can be Neutral tribes, but even before that, we see Neptulon serving Naga as far back as TBC. With Nazjatar's recent defeat and the Queen's absence, it's not unreasonable to imagine that some Naga have grown disillusioned and turned more neutral.

That about covers it! Please remember that some of these sources are obscure, gathered from the flavour text of dropped items (naga molting), mounts (that bloatray airsacs are used to ease breathing on the surface) etc. I intend to source everything that isn't speculative here, but I am only human and it will take a hot minute before I get all the links! Until then, take my word for it! Or don't! The beauty of having such little lore and so much wiggle room with retcons over loyalties, faith, biology, etc. is that disagreements can be easily handwaved! Oh, this Illidari Naga doesn't like Azshara anymore, and this one does! Oh, this one heard whispers from N'zoth and this one didn't! Oh, this one can shoot venom from their spikes and this one can't! You don't have to align with a singular canon. There's ways these concepts can coexist IC without conflict. And with that in mind, I once again reiterate that this is not a guide! If you want a super anti-Azshara Illidari Naga, or a super mind controlled N'zoth Naga, or a man who doesn't like serving women, that's all fine! This is just a bit of help to those that are interested!
