Defining Discussion

Recommended Posts

Going to keep it very simple and straight forward.

In a room, box, chat whatever the environment.
Where the only type of indicator for any information/data is the output of the other people/players.
The output in this case being the message sent from other players.

How you define who, what message is aimed towards.

A few rules:
1. Who has sent what is defined.
2. Nothing but "Who" sent it, and the "Message sent" is defined.

Example 1

Player-1: What is the meaning of life?
Player-2: I've never been to this place before.
Player-1: I mean its all just an illusion.
Player-3: Disney is really damn weird!11!!1!
Player-4: 42!

How do you define that "42!" is the answer to the question sent by player 1?

Example 2

Player-1: Give me your best jokes.
Player-2: What's 42+95/2?
Player-3: Potatos is the worst rotfruit of them all.
Player-4: You won't drink away the alcoholism.

How do you define what the answer to Player 1's question is here?

I could go on but the idea should be rather clear.
In this type of environment how do you define what is the answer to what?

I think you're diving into some philosophical questions about linguistics that can't really be answered in a satisfyingly meaningful way.

I think Google and such are still working on defining this. It's really hard to interpret such - even people miss those things some times - it's really just all memory & contextual - a bot would need to know the english language, grammar, and relationships between things, ect, just to figure out if the reply is directed at the other person.

Possibly so. But its really just a Data-Gathering issue I'm trying to solve.

You don't? I think this is a, as pooh said, a philosophical thing that cannot be answered by mechanics or logic. How do you know what you already know is actually the right answer? How do you know a bird is, in fact, a bird? Your parents probably told you so, and theirs before them, but how do they know? How do you know? The human mind is far from perfect. Math was a human invention. Science was a human invention. Religion was a human invention. We don't know jack shit. So there's no right answer, anywhere.

I don't even understand if I'm answering the question here. But then again... How do you know I am the one with the answer?

You store each message, and who the original sender was.

If it is a question you flag it as incomplete, and wait on a possible response.

Obviously the meaning of life is Disney is really Damn Weird!!!1!!

But seriously this gets in with the voice recognition stuff that google, microsoft and apple do. If you have multiple people talking when asking google something it struggles to do its task.

The problem in and of itself is non-deterministic, there's far too much nuance in language to really have a catch-all algorithm to determine what is and what isn't a valid response. I hate to be a bummer, but this is an incredibly difficult problem to solve, if not impossible. In fact, wikipedia basically lists it as an unsolved, philosophical problem of linguistics.
