this is an incredible concept with some absolutely amazing mechanics for guild events. love it!

looks incredible!

awesome! turns out it wasn't something i was doing wrong, it's just the shield happened to reference a different .SKIN file than what I originally thought
replacing items is a lot less tedious than I made it out to be haha, i hope i didn't scare you away from it!
you can mark the thread title as "complete" now if you want
-
delete everything from your "Shield" folder and extract the contents of this into it, then restart your game
in game, the items that display these custom skins are as follows:
Gold:
[SHIELD_ROUND_A_01BLUE_1b]
[SHIELD_ROUND_A_01BLACK_1b]
[SHIELD_ROUND_A_01ORANGE_1b]
Red:
[SHIELD_WHEEL_B_01_1b]
I believe I fixed the crashes as well.

let me know if you figure it out
i sure as hell dunno what to do
haha, okay, so this is interesting - i got it to work for the gold version of the shield, but only for two versions of the item
let me see if i can get the red version working on your shield
-
3 minutes ago, Firestorm said:we can try a diff shield maybe?
i doubt it's a shield specific thing, probably something to do with the file structure that i've forgotten
-
getting the same result - trying to wrack my brain as to why this is happening but i'm coming up blank. i've replaced items this way before with no problems
hoping someone else on this forum will chime in because i'm an idiot
-
Just now, Firestorm said:no, I didn't.
okay, one moment, i will try this
-
Just now, Firestorm said:wait, if it's case sensitive then maybe i goofed up and mixed the .m2 casing with .blp
it's not case sensitive - did you type in those file endings? if so, cut them out
-
1 minute ago, Firestorm said:using logic im just going to deduct that for the second shield, I'll want to take away the '_2b' at the end
and it was pretty self explanatory for the .blp and .m2
but with the .skin, I'm a bit confused. will it be 01Orange00 or 0100Orange
or what
Shield_Round_A_01.m2
Shield_Round_A_0100.skin
Shield_Round_A_01Orange.blp
just pulled up the filenames for that shield, here you go. let me know whether or not it works for you by the way - if it doesn't, i'll just get it to work for me and send it to you haha
-
also to correct myself, you don't need to add .m2, .blp, .skin at the end of the names - if you do, it will not work. sorry
-
1 minute ago, Firestorm said:the shield im trying to replace is named in-game as SHIELD_WHEEL_B_01_1b
i take it that, with the custom mogit using file names, that's what I use for renaming the files
I'd try and figure this all out myself but WMV isn't working for me
okay, i will look at the filenames for that shield and write out a little guide for you
1. Rename "shield_cotstrat_d_02.m2" to "Shield_Wheel_B_01" (keep it in item/objectcomponents/shield)
2. Rename "Shield_CoTStrat_D_02Stratholme.blp" to "SHIELD_WHEEL_B_01.BLP" (keep it in item/objectcomponents/shield)
3. Rename "Shield_CoTStrat_D_0200.skin" to "Shield_Wheel_B_0100.skin" (keep it in item/objectcomponents/shield)
repeat for any other shield you may want to replace with different textures, for your friend
-
6 minutes ago, Firestorm said:is there any chance you can do a yellow version too? my friend is begging for it lol
i've also attached the .SKIN file because i'm pretty sure you need to replace that
-
1 minute ago, Firestorm said:okay but I can't actually see the m2, everything is hidden except for the files currently installed from patches
you can save it through modelviewer - here, i'll attach it
-
3 minutes ago, Firestorm said:got WMV to start working
had to close the client first
oh, whaddya know, that worked for me too. im dumb
path is item/Objectcomponents/shield/
m2 is called "shield_cotstrat_d_02.m2"
-
1 minute ago, Firestorm said:wowmodelviewer isn't opening mine either /shrug
it's fine though
if you want a temporary fix it'd be easy to replace the blue stratholme shield - you'd just rename it to the blp you included in your original post, and that would work fine. i know you're looking for something people have a low chance of using though
-
Just now, Firestorm said:i'll install WMV and see if I can find it by myself
if not, i'll come back here and whine
but thank you so much for the texture <3
sorry i couldn't be more helpful - if you do find it, here's how you would replace it:
let's say you wanted to replace a bow with that shield m2 and BLP (don't do this, it's just an example - replace a shield haha). let's say you decide to replace "bow_1h_draenorchallenge_d_01.m2". you would rename the stratholme shield m2 to "bow_1h_draenorchallenge_d_01.m2". then you do the same thing with the blp - the blp you would want to replace in this example is "bow_1h_draenorchallenge_d_0100.blp", so you'd take "Shield_CoTStrat_D_02Stratholme.blp" and rename it to "bow_1h_draenorchallenge_d_0100.blp". all of these files would be in objectcomponents/shield
sorry i can't do more, modelviewer won't load my data folder, and CASC explorer won't load at all
-
7 minutes ago, Firestorm said:any idea what the .m2 is?
and it -all- goes under objectcomponents -> shield right?
new to file editing
i can't get modelviewer or CASCexplorer to work right now, so i don't really have a way of finding the m2 filename or the file path for you. i'm pretty sure it's objectcomponents/shield yeah
-
17 minutes ago, Firestorm said:edit THREE: okay, I really appreciate this, but how do I get it to replace a different shield that isn't commonly used? I can apply it as a patch myself (with your permission of course) but yeah
you have my permission because that's blizzard's shield, haha, i just put the texture on!
i'm pretty sure you just pick a shield that you think nobody will use, then replace the .m2 and .blp files of that shield with the stratholme shield
